Rebuilding 50 Critical Valves at a Large Specialty Chemical Company
Close cooperation between Novaspect and the Instrument & Valve Services division of Emerson Process Management was required to meet the very fast track established by a large specialty chemical company in central Illinois, for rebuilding nearly 50 critically important control valves in a hydrogen production plant. Not only was the job completed within the allotted 2 1/2 days to the satisfaction of company officials, no significant issues have developed with those valves in more than two years since the turnaround . Continuous Vibration Monitoring Supports Quality Assurance in Steel Finishing
The surface of a coil of steel must be flawless before shipment to manufacturers of highly polished parts such as auto hoods or appliance doors. Yet, heavy-duty roll grinders and other Finishing Mill equipment are subject to extreme loads that can damage bearings and other machine parts, causing vibration-induced “chatter”. The end result can be a noticeable pattern on the surface of the steel, which may require rework and could even lead to the costly rejection of that product. To combat vibration at all levels, steel companies employ specialized technicians who go into the mill with handheld equipment to measure vibration levels on rotating equipment and analyze the results. To obtain zero-defect quality, it is absolutely critical to identify roll grinder vibration as early as possible.
Now, a steel mill in the Novaspect territory has carried vibration monitoring one important step further by installing the CSI 4500 Machinery Health™ Monitor on its sheet cold rolling mill and work roll grinders to continuously guard against mechanical problems that could result in surface defects.

Unit Capacity Restoration and Air Permit Compliance
The Novaspect engineering service team took a bottom-up approach to combustion tuning. Starting with proper pulverizer set-up for the current fuel. Key items in the pulverizer setup included, burner line balancing, primary air/fuel velocity, and mill exit temperature targets. Once these base level coal pulverizer settings were established the next step was adjustment of primary air to secondary air ratio. This included balancing the distribution of the secondary air within the windbox. The secondary air was balanced for all the various pulverizer load combinations and resulted in a burner zone disk positioning map. The final step to this bottom-up combustion set-up was the fine tuning of the Over-fire air to secondary air ratio.
Customer Benefit: Restored 14 MWs of capacity with improving emissions compliance. Opacity 4%, CO 70 ppm, NOX 0.4 lbs/mmBtu. Additionally the unit can be put onto automatic generation control without major CO compliance issues.
